I do not seem to grasp the fact that the McMansion is the “new American home”. I seem to begin to seize the central point of the article, The McMansion Next Door: Why the American House Needs a Makeover by Cathleen McGuigan. It conveys the fact that the new style of home is bigger and better. That all everyone seems to want nowadays is newer and dream able house to live in.
I have little siblings that are starting to grab concepts of the real world. When I asked them both to draw a house, they drew squares with triangle tops. But after sitting and thinking, what are their children going to draw up when asked the same question. What are their imaginations going to believe is a “typical” home? What is this all going to become? With today’s society, the way it is, who knows. It can be a two story house with a two car garage still or maybe even a mansion, what about a castle or even a three story building with multiple movie theatre and bowling ally inside.
American’s want bigger and better. They want what they see. And some will succeed in that. But what I still can’t seem to understand is why houses are becoming what they are. The “traditional” family is growing smaller, but we still seem to make the houses bigger. To me all that space is just a waste; a waste of money, electricity, hard labor, and an all over hole in a house.
So why this drastic change? Why the McMansion? Who knows; ;I don’t think anyone will every really find out why the families are getting smaller but the hoes are becoming bigger.
